Teacher Education at UIS reports 100% pass rate

            SPRINGFIELD - The Teacher Education program at the University of Illinois at Springfield has reported a 100% pass rate for students completing program requirements for Illinois initial teacher certification, according to Larry Stonecipher, dean of the College of Education and Human Services.

            The pass rate for 1999-2000 was released recently in response to accountability measures required by Title II of the Higher Education Act (HEA).  The new reporting requirements are for institutions and states on teacher preparation and licensing.

            "The 100% pass rate indicates that our teacher candidates at UIS are well prepared in content and pedagogy and will do a great job in the teaching field," Stonecipher said. "Good test scores, as well as knowledge of learning styles, sensitivity to diversity, active decision-making, and enthusiasm in the classroom, help make a good teacher.  We are quite proud that our students demonstrate these abilities."

            UIS offers certification in elementary education and secondary English, math, science, and social science. Students either enter with, or earn, a degree in the liberal arts at the same time that they are working on certification.  All UIS teacher education programs are approved by the State Teacher Certification Board/Illinois State Board of Education.

            "This excellent pass rate speaks well of the quality of students who enter our program, as well as the quality of the program itself," said Allan Cook, chair of the teacher education program. "Teacher Education at UIS is committed to producing teachers who possess a strong foundation in the liberal arts,excellence in teaching, and knowledge of methods for using technology to enhance teaching," he said.

            In 1998, the U.S. Congress enacted amendments to the HEA.  As amended, Title II of the HEA addressed the issue of the quality of teacher preparation by doing two things: First, it authorized new federal grant programs to support states, institutions of higher education, and their school district partners, in improving the recruitment, preparation, and support of new teachers. Second, Title II included new accountability measures: reporting requirements for institutions and states on teacher preparation and licensing.
