UIS to host Student Environmental Coalition Legislative Conference

SPRINGFIELD – Students from throughout the state who are interested in environmental policy or the legislative process will converge on the University at Illinois at Springfield for the Illinois Student Environmental Coalition Legislative Conference to be held on the UIS campus February 12 and 13. The event is free and advance registration is not required.

Activities begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, in Public Affairs Center conference room C/D. Representatives from the Environmental Law and Policy Center, Lt. Governor’s Office,  Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, House of Representatives, and other entities will discuss a range of topics including electronic waste recycling measures currently pending in the legislature, lobbying for environmental policy, and current and future initiatives by the IEPA regarding greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Participants will also receive a crash course on the lobbying process and watch a video presentation. Refreshments will be provided.

At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, students will gather on campus before proceeding to the State Capital Complex where they will lobby with the members of the General Assembly on issues and legislation involving electronic waste recycling.

Conference participants will be provided with meals and accommodations. Co-hosts are UIS and UIS student groups Campus Greens and Students Allied for a Greener Earth (SAGE).

The ISEC comprises over 40 members from universities and colleges throughout Illinois and works to unite student organizations that are committed to improving campuses' environmental practices by facilitating the exchange of resources and ideas.
