SPRINGFIELD -- B. Joseph White, president of the University of Illinois, will speak on "The Nature of Leadership," at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 1, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on campus at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

The lecture will be followed by a book signing and reception in the Public Affairs Center restaurant at UIS. Both the presentation and reception are free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Brookens Library.

Dr. White will share insights about leadership gained from his experience both in academia and in the private sector. After the lecture, he will sign copies of his book, The Nature of Leadership: Reptiles, Mammals, and the Challenge of Becoming a Great Leader (AMACOM Press, 2007).

White became president of the U of I in January 2005.  Before that, he had been affiliated with the University of Michigan for nearly three decades, including a term as interim president. He also led the U-M Business School for 10 years and under his leadership the school achieved top ranking for its programs, increasing its annual fund-raising fivefold.

White's presentation is part of the ECCE (Engaged Citizenship Common Experience) Speakers Series at UIS, campus-sponsored lectures by speakers who exemplify engaged citizenship. The series is a one-hour course that is part of the Engaged Citizenship Common Experience, the distinctive set of courses taken by undergraduates at UIS to foster appreciation for and practice of diversity and the active effort to make a difference in the world.

Upcoming programs include a panel discussion on freedom of the press featuring Pulitzer Prize-winner Judith Miller on November 7; and a look at the reality of being a Native American in contemporary culture by multimedia artist James Luna on November 30.

Those unable to attend President White's presentation in person can view a webcast at UIS LIVE! at the time of the event.

For more information on President White's presentation, contact Jane Treadwell, university librarian and dean of library instructional services at UIS, at 206-6597.
