SPRINGFIELD – Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the campus ensembles gearing up for the fall semester at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Auditions are not required to join any of the groups outlined below, and participants can earn academic credit, if desired.

The groups are the UIS Band, Chorus, and Chamber Orchestra.

Music program directors are Sharon Graf, associate professor of ethnomusicology, and Todd Cranson, assistant director of co-curricular music. Both Graf and Cranson are quick to point out that dedicated attendance and a desire to realize one's musical potential are the only requirements for membership.

Rehearsals begin the week of August 20; all sessions will meet in room 33 of the Visual and Performing Arts Building, on the east side of campus. Each ensemble works on a varied repertory that is tailored to the group at hand.  Rehearsal schedules are as follows.

The UIS Chorus will rehearse on Tuesdays from 7 to 9:15 p.m. and/or Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The Chorus has given performances, ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway classics, at such events as the Springfield Festival of Trees, the UIS Talent Expo, and UIS commencement ceremonies.  First rehearsal is August 21. UIS students who wish to receive academic credit should enroll in MUS 101 or MUS 301 Chorus.

The UIS Band rehearsals are scheduled for Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. beginning August 20. The Band performs in concerts and at various campus activities.  UIS students who wish to earn academic credit should enroll in MUS 105 or 305 A Band.

The UIS Chamber Orchestra meets on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The first rehearsal will be August 23. This group performs a variety of music, from Renaissance to Modern. To take this class for academic credit, enroll in MUS 105 or 305 B Chamber Orchestra.

Academic credit is available to those who have been admitted to study at UIS. Registration for the fall 2007 semester is currently underway; classes begin Monday, August 20. For information on enrolling in any of these ensembles for credit, go to www.uis.edu or phone the Registration Office at 206-6174.
