SPRINGFIELD – Public Radio WUIS 91.9-WIPA 89.3 will host a concert showcasing some of central Illinois' best young classical musicians at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 2, at First Presbyterian Church, 321 S. Seventh Street, in Springfield.  Both the performance and the reception and award presentation immediately following are free and open to the public.

Nineteen performers, ranging in age from 10 to 17, will perform works by Bach, Gaubert, Beethoven, Joplin, and others before the audience and a panel of judges.  Prizes totaling $1,200 will be awarded to the top three winners in junior and senior categories.

The concert contest, made possible through support from Ameren, is intended to foster young musical talent in the area and to encourage young musicians to perform classical music. More than 43 students entered the contest by submitting an application, a letter from a musical instructor, and an audition tape.  The finalists will be judged at the live concert by a panel of professional musicians.

Karl Scroggin, WUIS-WIPA music director, noted, "We had a record number of entrants this year, so it was very difficult to choose the finalists from so many talented musicians.  I'm as nervous for these kids as their parents are because I know what it’s like to get up on stage and perform."

The station will record the evening's performances for later broadcast.
