Current Students – Getting Started

It is our goal to make service a part of the experience of every UIS student. Service provides you with opportunities to gain experience in your major field as well as to engage in areas you may be passionate about outside of your area of study. It is a great way to gain new perspective,  become a leader among your peers, and feel connected to both UIS and the community. Before you begin volunteering through our office we encourage you to familiarize yourself with our guidelines for successful volunteering.

Have you recently done volunteer work?

You can track your service hours by logging hours in UIS Connection.  Log in to UIS Connection with your NetID and password and select the service hours option in the drop down box below your initial.

If you are in need of assistance, contact the Volunteer Center in Union 103 (volunteer@uis.edu).  We can also help find your service hours to verify them for use on a resume, scholarship application or award nomination.

Ongoing Service

One time service projects are great, but the Volunteer Center urges students to make a longer commitment to service. Our partnerships with agencies such as Habitat for Humanity, the Central Illinois Foodbank, Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach and Concordia VIllage make it possible for students to serve on a regular basis.  If you desire an experience that will leave an impact on your life, put your leadership skills to work and make a difference in the community, check with our staff for more information.

UIS Service Organizations

The Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center works with many different Student Service Organizations including Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, Alternative Spring Break, Red Cross Club, Black Male Collegiate Society, Christian Student Fellowship, Habitat for Humanity and more.

Off-Campus Service Opportunities

If you need help finding, starting, or participating in service, we’d love to help. We keep up to date directory of volunteer opportunities in the Springfield area and frequently help students find organizations that match their interests and time commitment. We also keep a directory of non-profit organizations that may have opportunities related to your interests.

Internships,  Prior Learning & Service Learning

Other Departments at UIS offer great opportunities to get involved during your time at UIS.  The Department of Internship and Prior Learning Services combines academic learning, community service, and reflection through service learning, internships and prior learning.  The Internship Services Program offers off-campus internships, projects, and travel opportunities for undergraduates to apply knowledge and explore career options in the “real” world. Service Learning is an opportunity for students to provide community service to local non-profit agencies while receiving college credit.  The Career Development Center connects students to jobs and internships that can help you advance your career before you graduate.
