UIS Programs: China/Korea/Japan

Continuity and Change in East Asia
Credit Hours: 4
Summer 2015

UIS will offer a short term study abroad program to China, South Korea and Japan in June of 2015.  The program will investigate the different ways that the three cultures have interacted historically and how they have responded to western culture.  This course is an interdisciplinary, team-taught course that provides a foundation for understanding East Asia through the disciplinary lenses of history, economics, religion, art/architecture and anthropology. Further, the course incorporates understanding the symbolic and aesthetic values of East Asia at the intersection of the pre-modern and modern, as demonstrated in a variety of media, including poetry, travel writing, and architecture.
