UIS Attends the National Speech Championship

(March 30, 2019) – The UIS Speech and Debate Team attended its first ever National Speech Championship, a relatively new national tournament that features competition in the major speech event categories. The competition was hosted by Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Thirty-two teams from across the nation took part in the tournament.

As one of the top novice competitors at the tournament, first-year competitor Liza Zavala advanced to the novice exhibition rounds in extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking. She becomes the first student from the University of Illinois Springfield to be recognized at this competition.

The National Speech Championship is the last tournament for the season. Over the next few months, the returning students will begin working on new speeches for the upcoming season. A travel schedule for the 2019-2020 season will be posted at the beginning of the fall semester. UIS Places in the Top Five at Novice Nationals

(March 15, 2019) – The UIS Speech and Debate team returned to the national stage by taking part in the Novice Nationals speech and debate tournament hosted this year by Bowling Green State University. The team placed 5th in Division III team sweepstakes. Teams are placed into divisions based on the number of speeches entered at the tournament.Team Photo - 2019 Novice Nationals

“I could not be prouder of this team” said coach Timothy Bill. He continued, “most of these students have never done speech and debate before this year. They started from scratch this fall and have grown as speakers at every competition we’ve traveled to.  Their hard work made this team award possible.”

Novice Nationals is a competition for students in their first year of collegiate speech and debate. The organization is dedicated to providing an educational, yet competitive experience for students new to the activity. This year, teams from as far away as Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania attended the competition. UIS last attended this tournament in 2014.

Spring Season Successes

SPRINGFIELD, IL. (February 28, 2019) –  The UIS Speech and Debate Team concluded the regular season by traveling to two additional tournaments this spring.

Team Photo - 2019 Gorlok GalaIn January, the team traveled to Webster University to take part in the Gorlok Gala speech and debate tournament. The Gorlok Gala is one of the largest regular season tournaments in the country and featured competition from as far away as Idaho, California, and Pennsylvania. Junior Cameron Rexroad earned an excellent award in persuasive speaking.

Team Photo - 2019 MAFA TournamentIn February, the team returned to Webster University for the Missouri Association of Forensic Activities speech and debate tournament. The team faced off against some of the strongest teams in our region and learned a great deal in preparation for nationals. This tournament also featured the largest squad of the season thus far with six students representing UIS at the competition.

Fall Semester Firsts

SPRINGFIELD, IL. (December 12, 2018) – The UIS Speech and Debate Team traveled to three competitions during the fall semester. After observing rounds at the Harris-Hahn-Howell Tournament held at Illinois Central College in October, the team traveled to Ohio in November and Missouri in December.

Team Photo - 2018 Falcon ClassicThe Falcon Classic speech and debate tournament was hosted by Bowling Green State University in November. Junior Cameron Rexroad became the first person from the team to advance to a final round this season. She placed sixth in novice persuasion.

Team Photo - 2018 Gateway SwingThe Gateway Swing speech and debate tournament was hosted by Webster University in St. Louis. Three members of the team traveled to this competition and spoke about important societal issues such as rural domestic abuse and combating rape culture.

Director of Speech and Debate Timothy Bill explained “this was a great start to our year. We’ve learned a lot and come along way as a team in just a few short months. We’re going to have a really good spring semester.”

First Practice of the Season

SPRINGFIELD, IL. (October 8, 2018) – The UIS Speech and Debate team is looking for new team members for the 2018-2019 competitive season. Membership on the team is open to all undergraduate students at UIS regardless of major. No previous experience is required to join the team.

The first team practice of the season will take place on Tuesday, October 16 from 4-8 PM in the team’s practice room, WUIS room 2. If you are interested in learning more about the team, this is a great chance to stop by and find out more. Additionally, there will be ice cream available for anyone who visits practice on this day.

The director of the team, Timothy Bill will also be visiting classes around campus over the next few weeks. If you get a chance, make sure to say ‘hello’. He’ll likely be coming to a classroom near you and will happy to answer any questions you have about the team.

UIS Speech and Debate Team Starts the New Year

SPRINGFIELD, IL (October 1, 2018) – After a brief hiatus this spring, the UIS Speech and Debate team has returned for the new competitive season. Over the summer, the team was relocated back to the Department of Communication and a new director has been hired. The team is now looking for new recruits to relaunch this successful program.

As coach at UK, he lead the team to four top ten placings at nationals, coached two national champions, and hosted the 2016 Pi Kappa Delta national competition. He has had students recognized at the national level in nearly every category of speech and debate events.

“I am incredibly excited for our future here at UIS” says Director Bill. “The students at UIS are incredibly capable and I know we’ll be competing against the best in the nation in no time.” Anyone who is interested in joining the team should contact Director Bill for more information.
