Dr. Karen Swan was the James J. Stukel Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at UIS. She was a nationally renowned and beloved scholar, researcher, teacher and mentor. With more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, books and book chapters, she was widely known for the insight and precision of her publications. Her leadership was notable in the collaborative development of the Community of Inquiry approach in teaching and learning. She was beloved by both colleagues and students for her intellect as well as her caring wisdom and compassion. She was the UIS principal investigator in a number of major grants leading research into the application of data analytics to enlighten the decision-making process in higher education. The Karen Swan Memorial Fund will be used to support a variety of activities that will serve to honor and further build upon the scholarship, teaching and mentorship of Dr. Swan. Exemplar activities may include a national symposium on practices Dr. Swan espoused through her research and scholarship; student research support; faculty research support; and the support of publication of new approaches in technology-enhanced learning including distance education.
