Who do I contact with questions or concerns while staying in on-campus isolation or quarantine?

Am I allowed to leave my room during isolate or quarantine?

No; once you start your isolation or quarantine period, you should remain there until officially released by Health Services. The only exception is to seek medical care or COVID-19 testing.

Am I allowed to go home to complete my isolation or quarantine?

Yes. Students are encouraged to go home to complete their isolation or quarantine, as most students report home is more comfortable for them. Students are encouraged to call their families to discuss this option.


Will I have a roommate in on-campus isolation or quarantine housing?

Depending on room availability, it is possible you will have a roommate for the duration of your isolation or quarantine period. In those cases, you will be notified you are getting a roommate and each of you will have your own private bedroom and bathrooms, per CDC recommendations.

Am I allowed to have visitors?

No. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, visitors are not allowed inside isolation or quarantine spaces. We do encourage you to stay connected to friends, family and classmates during this time via Zoom, social media or other online communications.

What should I take with me? What is in the room?

Once you are notified by Health Services of your need to relocate, you will have about an hour to pack your personal belongings. You will not be permitted to return to your assigned space until you have been officially released by Health Services. The on-campus housing isolation and quarantine spaces are furnished, but empty of the comforts of your home or room, so please plan to bring items of comfort with you. We recommend packing lightly, as you will personally be responsible for carrying your items to and from your isolation or quarantine space.

Here is a suggested packing list for your convenience:

  • Clothes (including pajamas, undergarments, socks to last you about 14 days)
  • computer, webcam (if available), and charger
  • phone and charger
  • prescription medications and/or over-the-counter medications (including pain/fever reducers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, or cough suppressants, if available)
  • toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, comb, brush, hand soap, etc.
  • personal care items
  • thermometer
  • pillow/extra blanket
  • all books, notes, etc. needed to complete your coursework online
  • face mask to be worn once isolation is complete and you return to your assigned space
  • snack items (enough to last 14 days)

The following items will be available in the room:

  • bed, desk, dresser
  • refrigerator
  • microwave
  • trash can and trash bags
  • shower curtain
  • linen packet (includes sheets, blanket, 2 towels, fresh linen packets are provided weekly)

How do I get food or drinks?

You can have food delivered to your on-campus housing space through off-campus vendors or friends/family. Deliveries must be dropped at the front door. Delivery persons should not enter your space, nor should you come out to greet them.

Meal deliveries are also available through our campus Food Services. You are not automatically enrolled in meal deliveries through campus Food Services. If you are interested in this option, you will need to set the deliveries up by contacting Geoff Evans, Director of Food Services at geva2@uis.edu. There will be a limited menu to choose from, but Food Services can work with you on any food allergy or dietary restrictions. If you wish to sign up for meal delivery through campus Food Services, you will need to send your email by 3:00pm that day; emails received after 3:00pm will go unanswered until the next business day and it will be up to you to provide your own meals in the meantime. Charges for these meals can by paid via your campus meal plan.

How do I dispose of my trash?

Trash is collected each week on Tuesday mornings at 9:00am. Please have all trash secured in a provided trash bag and have it on the front porch at 9:00am. Residence Life staff will come around to collect ad dispose of the trash. You should not leave your space to take trash to the dumpsters.

What if there is a fire or other building emergency and I need to evacuate?

If you hear the fire alarm system sound, please evacuate the building immediately, wear a mask properly and be sure to maintain appropriate physical distancing in the emergency assembly point. Return to your isolation or quarantine space as soon as emergency personnel and/or Residence Life have given the signal to do so.

What mental health resources are available to me while I am in isolation or quarantine?

We encourage you to reach out to University Counseling Services at 217-206-7122 to set up an appointment to speak with a professional counselor. You can also visit their Self Care Resource Page. A counselor will also be assigned to reach out to you at various points during your stay, to ensure you are doing okay.

When am I allowed to leave my isolation or quarantine space?

You will receive an email notification from Health Services letting you know that you are cleared to leave. Before being approved to leave quarantine, you must test negative for COVID-19. Once you have left your isolation or quarantine space to return to your assigned space, please call Residence Life staff at 217-206-8100 to let them know your isolation/quarantine period has officially ended.

Once Health Services has cleared me to leave isolation/quarantine, what do I need to do?

Ensure you have completed the following steps:

  • Remove all personal items from isolation/quarantine space
  • Bag up all trash
  • Call the Residence Life Staff On Call at 217-206-8100 to set up a time to return the keys and let them know you have returned to your assigned space

Spaces that are left with damages and/or excessive trash may be subject to a $100/person cleaning fee.

Will I be billed for staying in isolation or quarantine on-campus housing?

You are not billed any additional cost for housing while in quarantine and isolation housing. The only costs associated with quarantine and isolation housing are the costs for meal deliveries through campus Food Services (if you sign up for this option) or any cleaning fees (charged only if spaces are left with damages or excessive trash).

Who else should I contact while I am in isolation or quarantine?

We recommend that you contact your professors if your health or isolation/quarantine will prevent you from attending or participating in class. We also recommend that you alert any employers you will be unable to attend work until you are released. You are not required to share specific health information.

What can I do to combat boredom during my isolation and quarantine period?
