Career Planning

The bachelor’s degree in Public Policy is designed to open up a world of exciting career opportunities working in state, local, and national government, policy analysis, nonprofit agencies, academia, and the private sector. A curriculum that combines rigorous academic training with real practical political experience provides Public Policy students with the skills, confidence, and credentials to work as a legislative staffer, policy advisor, campaign manager, political strategist, opposition researcher, research analyst, or policy advocate.

Because UIS is located in the Illinois State Capitol, opportunities abound for students to develop relationships in internship placements with political candidates, elected officials, legislative staffers, and professionals working in lobbying firms and non-profit agencies. The Public Policy curriculum facilitates these relationships by connecting students to internships with government, non-profit, and private agencies, as well as volunteer opportunities with local, state, and national political campaigns. Politically interested and ambitious students are further encouraged to network with like-minded students from across the state through participation in the Model Illinois Government and Moot Court annual simulations held at the Illinois State Capitol.

And, for those interested in international politics and public policy, students can participate in Model United States which holds its annual event in New York City attended by college delegations representing countries from around the world.
