Since 2012, he’s covered state government and politics for NPR Illinois and about a dozen other public radio stations from Chicago to Carbondale. He was previously A&E editor at The State Journal-Register and Statehouse bureau chief for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
Originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, Mackey earned a master’s degree from the UIS Public Affairs Reporting program. During his internship with The State Journal-Register, then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich recited poetry to him while standing next to the Capitol trash compactor.
