The registrar will send you a note indicating when you will be able to begin registering for classes. Classes fill up and admission over the class limit is not at all a sure thing. We may be able to add extra classes if we know early enough. Please register as quickly as possible.
If you are an undergrad at UIS who has been admitted to the MPA program and will start next semester, you will need to email firstname.lastname@example.org for help in getting into graduate classes. Please explain your situation and provide your UIN.
Note that we have three types of class delivery. On-ground classes meet on campus weekly. Blended classes meet on ground for some classes and online for others. Online classes never meet on campus.
For our four hour class students, these students, especially those who are working, take two classes per semester. One class is no problem, but three classes begin to raise the possibility that students will struggle with getting the work done and receiving a decent grade. Students beginning after fall 2015 take three hour classes. Three three-hour classes in some semesters may be more reasonable depending on work schedules.
Important note: Students who have entered the program prior to fall 2015 will need to register for one additional hour (PAD 599) for every course they take. Since all PAD classes are three hours beginning in fall of 2015 and students who began before fall of 2015 need four credits per class, the additional hour is essential to have enough credits to graduate. The only exception to this rule is for four hour electives outside of the PA department. Use the special permission for one hour class form for these one hour additions. Students will also need to submit petitions for each additional hour to ensure that these will count toward the correct graduation requirements. The department will email students with drafts of the petitions about a month into the semester.
CORE CLASSES and CAPSTONE
Remember that online core classes are held for online program students until the end of the spring semester. After that date, if there are openings, then on-ground students can register for these online classes.
If you are on a waitlist, you will have a finite period to respond ”Yes, I am still interested.” or “No, I no longer want this class” once you are notified you can register for the class. So it is important to keep up with your messages.
If a special permission electronic form is required for a class (see below), you will be notified by the office when you can register via e-mail, so check regularly.

ELECTIVES Most online and on-ground electives are open to everyone from the first day of registration. Some classes have a portion of the class held for certificate students who need such classes for a period of time.
PAD 580 – Offered in the fall only. Click HERE to request special permission. You must be a GPSI student or have an approved departmental internship.
SUMMER CLASSES We know that there are not enough summer classes to meet the demand. The problem is that we have no budget to increase the number of classes offered in the summer. So it is best to sign up as quickly as you can, but not to count on getting in to a summer class as you do your planning. We wish we could do more, but the issue is determined by a higher level in the university than the department.
FULL CLASSES If a class is full, you can still register for the class either by special permission, if needed, or through banner, and you will be added to the waiting list for that class. All requests and correspondence should include your UIN. This will ensure that your matter is correctly and efficiently handled. If a spot opens up, you will be notified by the PA office. Note that the system may show spaces in a class when we are in the process of putting waiting list students into the class.
