Jaimie Newby

I’m an Academic Advisor by profession, having received my M.S. in Academic Advising from Kansas State University. I live in Jacksonville, IL with my husband, two cats, and two dogs, just one block from where my husband and I met while students at Illinois College. There, I studied International Studies and designed the first ever World Religions concentration for that major. Along the way, I took a few semesters to complete an A.A. at Lincoln Land, before returning to Illinois College. to finish my B.A.

I grew up on a peninsula in a town of about 150 people. School was always quite easy for me. I didn’t realize just how much I loved learning until I was properly challenged during my liberal arts undergraduate education. This is part of why I became an Academic Advisor –I never wanted to leave college! I anticipate that I’ll complete either a Ph.D. or an Ed.D. in the next few years.

I’m very involved with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), having presented at a few conferences, I have been published and am an active member of the Small Colleges and Universities Commission (SCUC). I am always looking for opportunities to collaborate with like-minded colleagues, whether it be research, writing, or presenting.

My advising philosophy centers on empowering students to not only become masters of the tools that will help them most on the road to success, but also to encourage them to enjoy the journey and look for meaning and growth where it might be least expected.  I love golf, classic rock, 90’s country and hip hop, NPR, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, U.S. history, hiking and kayaking.

Undergraduate (on-campus) students in the College of Public Affairs and Administration are encouraged to meet with me for academic advising, including navigating remaining requirements, clarifying general education requirements, assisting with petitions, interpreting college policies, and more related to your path to graduation. Students should still meet consistently with their faculty advisor, who as an expert in their field, will gladly engage in meaningful discussion of goals and interests an they pertain to your academia and career exploration.
