The UIS Philosophy department increases awareness,
understanding, and critical reflections on:

  • personal values,
  • the major value conflicts in contemporary society,
  • the nature and limits of various forms of knowledge, and
  • major problems of knowledge or value.

The courses offered in the department also stress active discussion and interaction between students and faculty. Philosophy is not solely a lecture-oriented field of study. Instructors are very involved in weekly online course discussions, and students who participate are more likely to get the most out of each class.

Since online classes do not possess the same face-to-face quality as their traditional classroom counterparts, students are also encouraged to get to know their fellow classmates in “coffeehouses”: course chatrooms that allow for friendly banter off-topic from formal course discussion.
