Spring 2020 Orientation

First-Year Freshmen Students:

KickStart: Wednesday, January 8 – Thursday, January 9
Semester Launch: Thursday, January 9 – Saturday, January 11

Transfer/Graduate Students (Registration is now open) Tuesday, January 7, 2019 4-7:45 p.m. Schedule and advising information available on the Transfer or Graduate New Student Orientation pages respectively.


Summer/Fall 2020 First-Year (Freshmen) New Student Orientation

For all first-year, freshmen students admitted to the Summer and Fall 2020 semesters. Registration for Summer KickStart will open February 2020.

There are two parts to the mandatory first-year (freshmen) orientation experience: KickStart and Semester Launch.  Please make sure to note these dates on personal and family calendars when planning work and vacation schedules.

Part I: 2020 KickStart.

June: Two-day, overnight sessions (all students stay overnight in the summer conference hall).

Day 1: Student programming – 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.;  Parent programming – 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Day 2: Student programming – 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; Parent programming – 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.                                                            * Schedule subject to change

Orientation Fee for students covers refreshment break, dinner, snack on day 1 and breakfast and lunch Day 2, in addition to overnight accommodations in the conference hall.

August is the same two-day session and schedule, but only students living on-campus will stay overnight in their rooms, commuter students (students living at home or off-campus) will come each day from home. August is designated for out-of-state and international freshmen. It is also an Honors and Athlete designated session.

Parent/Family Orientation is offered at each KickStart session.  Programming is offered over both days, but is optional. Parents/Family members can attend what they want to attend. Parents/Family members will need to make overnight accommodations, they will not be able to stay with students.

Registration will open the first week of February 2020 (subject to change). Students who have accepted their admission will start receiving information by mail and email in mid-January.

Dates for 2020

August 17-18 *designated for out-of-state and international students; registration will open in mid-July

Note:

  • Freshmen can attend any of the dates offered.
  • Freshmen Honors students (accepted into the CAP Honors Program) have designated orientation dates when Honors advisors are available.
  • Freshmen Athletes, who will be playing on one of UIS’s athletic teams, will also have designated dates to attend based on the availability of their advisors and UIS Athletics staff.
  • These designations will be posted in February.

Part II: Semester Launch

Semester Launch is for all new First-Year, Freshmen August 19-22.  Attendance is taken at mandatory events. See a tentative schedule on the Launch page.


New Transfer and Graduate Student Orientation Sessions Summer and Fall 2020

Orientation for new Transfer and Graduate Students is not mandatory, but highly encouraged.  “Take Care of Business” while campus offices are open.  The program is from 4-7:30 p.m. (subject to change). Dates for the Summer/Fall 2020 sessions are:

Thursday, May 28 Strongly encouraged for students entering Summer 2020
Wednesday, July 15
Friday, August 14 last session before Fall semester begins on August 24

Registration for Transfer and Graduate Orientation admitted to the Summer and Fall 2020 semesters will be available in early March 2020.
