The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team defeated the Missouri S&T Miners at home on Sunday afternoon. The Prairie Stars split their opening weekend of GLVC play, falling to Maryville by a score of 2-1 on Friday before shutting out Missouri S&T on Sunday.
The Prairie Stars were largely in control, maintaining possession for 67% of the matchup. UIS outshot the Miners 19-7 including nine on-target attempts. Carolyne Mathenia scored her career-first goal in the 27th minute, one that would be deemed the game-winner. Senior Abby Dellamorte earned the assist.
Madison Grandys went close on a couple of occasions and three additional Prairie Stars had one shot on goal, but Missouri S&T's Anastasia Barcom defended her goal well.
The Miners came up with just one on-target attempt that Allison Mirimanian would handle comfortably.
UIS is one of six GLVC women's soccer teams to open GLVC play with a 1-1 weekend. Drury, Maryville, and Missouri-St. Louis remain undefeated in conference play.
