University of Illinois Springfield student-athletes came together to make a difference on Civic Engagement Day, assembling more than 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for PB&J Springfield, a local organization that provides food to community members in need throughout Springfield.

Student-athletes from multiple UIS teams joined forces for the project, which was organized by UIS Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The event is part of the department's ongoing commitment to service and community involvement.

Hy-Vee in Springfield generously donated some of the ingredients used during the event, helping make the large-scale effort possible.

More UIS teams are scheduled to take part in the sandwich-making activity again next week, continuing the Prairie Stars' spirit of giving back.

Sandwiches donated to PB&J Springfield are distributed to a variety of local organizations, including:
  • St. John's Breadline
  • Washington Street Mission
  • Inner City Mission
  • Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery
  • Hope Springs
  • Contact Ministries
  • Grace Food Pantry
  • Helping Hands Shelter
  • Salvation Army
  • Veterans' Shelter
  • Street Feeding Program
  • Outdoor food pantries across Springfield
  • In-home food delivery programs
