UIS Women's Soccer fell to Drury on Wednesday with a final score of 1-0. The Prairie Stars outshot the Panthers 14-7 and put six shots on goal, seven in each half. UIS falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in GLVC play.
Illinois Springfield went into halftime down 1-0 after Drury's Keira Love scored off Leah McDonald's assist at 16:27. The Prairie Stars generated a concentrated response later in the half, with Riley Lloyd forcing a save at 25:57, two corner kicks in 24 seconds, and Sophia Davila putting another shot on goal at 27:00. Rachel Riney and Bridget Lyons added attempts in the final two minutes, but Drury held onto the 1-0 lead.
The Prairie Stars pressed early in the second half, recording four shots and two corner kicks between 49:15 and 55:25, including Mallory Herber's attempt off the left woodwork. Davila and Elyse Severson later put shots on frame, but Drury saved both chances, and the half remained scoreless. UIS thought it had equalized in the final five minutes, but the goal was disallowed, leaving the Prairie Stars scrambling for an equalizer in the closing minutes. The clock wound down, and UIS fell 1-0.
Davila tied for the team lead with three shots and put a team-high two on goal. Addi Wittenberg also recorded three shots, including one on frame. Gigi Yurevich played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with one save.
"I'm proud of our performance tonight," said Head Coach Scott Myers. "We were unlucky at times, credit to their goalkeeper for making a couple of top-notch saves to keep the ball out of the net. It felt like we took some great chances but were just a little off in the final third."
"I'm pleased with our back line and goalkeeper. We were able to shut down some very difficult front runners tonight. Traveling in the GLVC is difficult and tonight proved we can travel well and come away feeling confident in our performance. We look forward to getting back on the field tomorrow to get ready to face Truman State in a week's time. I know we will take tonight's loss as motivation to learn and get better."
Up next, the Prairie Stars host Truman State on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
