Career Highlights

“My most memorable moment, so far, has been my conversation with the phenomenal Cicely Tyson. Shortly after, I worked a presidential campaign in 2016 for the first woman candidate. Following the 2016 campaign, I assisted with conducting a police analysis on minority recruitment, retention and police community relations for Springfield, IL, which the city uses as guidelines for their department. Most currently, I am still amazed that I get to work for and engage with the Minority Whip of the U.S. Senate. Previously, as a graduate intern, I created legal documents that the Prisoner Review Board utilizes for the State of Illinois. Additionally, using a million dollar budget grant program, I administered grants for public health professionals. Recently, I’ve been appointed to serve as a Commissioner on the Civil Service Board for the City of Springfield.”

Memories of UIS

“One of my favorite memories is representing a country, Luxembourg, at the National Model United Nations New York Conference and GA3. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Richard Gilman-Opalsky’s classes, which were primarily about political theory and philosophy.”

How did UIS change or prepare you?

“The university and my professors provided me with a variety of tools (both theoretical and practical) that I can utilize whether I work for a nonprofit, civic organizations, campaigns, or local and federal government, which, I have been able to do in each area. I’m not sure if he knows this, however; Dr. Gilman-Opalsky’s teachings inspired me to always speak up, even when you think you shouldn’t (you may have a great idea), and that thinking differently is okay.”

Interesting Fact

“Every now and then, I enjoy a classical film such as ‘Imitation of Life,’ and dolphins, I really love dolphins.”
