Lara Semetko, soprano, is currently a Doctoral student in Performance-Jazz voice at UIUC. Comfortable in opera, musical theatre, and jazz, she has performed in a variety of roles, such as Titania in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, Lilli Vanessi/Kate in Kiss Me, Kate, Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Clara Johnson in The Light in the Piazza, to name a few and has been the soprano soloist for Bach’s Cantata 147 and Vivaldi’s Gloria.
As an avid recitalist, Ms. Semetko has performed in multiple venues, both home and abroad. She was the featured soloist for Central Michigan University’s Women’s Chorus, which toured Europe, the University of Windsor, Canada; Edge Productions’ Not Quite But Almost Winter concert, The William Penn’s 125th National Convention in Pittsburg, PA, and multiple engagements with the Southern Great Lakes Symphony, Greensboro Light Opera, and various concerts throughout the Midwest.
Ms. Semetko was selected as the Young Artist/Performer from Downriver Council for the Arts, Wayne County Young Artist, Detroit Hungarian Fine Arts Scholarship recipient, won the Young Artist Competition from Delta Omicron, CMU, a Semi-Finalist in the New York Lyric Opera Theatre Vocal Competition, and received the IOTE Encouragement Award in Opera.
Since 2013, Ms. Semetko has been the Vocal Coach at the Michigan Opera Theatre for their Operette Workshop and a guest clinician at music schools, competitions, and high schools. This summer, she presented “Crossing the Genres: A Classical Singer’s Guide to Jazz” at the International Congress of Voice Teachers Congress in Stockholm, Sweden.
Ms. Semetko is highly involved in community outreach, seeking opportunities to introduce, educate, and perform the works of various composers, specifically new American music. Ms. Semetko creates concerts to promote the works and educate the audience on works that are not typical from the standard classical repertoire.
Ms. Semetko is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the National Opera Association.
