Stephen Busath holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts Degree in Music Education from Brigham Young University – Idaho, and a Master’s Degree in Music Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His principal teachers include William Moersch, Ricardo Flores, Joel Spencer, Dr. David Taylor, Jay Lawrence, and Kobie Watkins.
Stephen enjoys an exciting career of teaching and performing percussion. He often is seen performing with Sinfonia da Camera and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. You can also find him playing percussion for Transit Brass, drum set with I-Pan, and latin percussion for the Robert Sears Quintet. He has performed with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Latin Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, and Modern Ensemble.
In 2014, Stephen became the Principal Percussionist for the Idaho Falls Symphony and the Idaho Falls Opera Company where he performed until 2016. In 2012, he won the Young Artist Concerto Competition put on by the Idaho Falls Symphony, where he gave the local premiere of Joseph Schwantner’s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra. Stephen has shared the stage with artists such as Brian Stokes Mitchell, Ed Calle, Mark O’Connor, The Canadian Brass, Alex Boye, William Moersch, and Ricardo Flores.
In addition to his position at UIS, Stephen is currently the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Percussion Division at UIUC, a position he has held since 2017. There he teaches the Percussion Methods course while also maintaining and organizing the school’s expansive inventory of percussion equipment. In Spring 2017, he was a part-time sabbatical replacement at UIUC, where he taught weekly lessons to undergraduate percussion majors. In addition, he is a percussion instructor at Mahomet-Seymour High School. Before coming to Illinois, Stephen was the Director of Bands at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls, Idaho from 2014-2016. He has held a private studio for percussion lessons since 2006.
Stephen is known for his versatility in many different genres of music, including jazz, classical, choral, popular, and Latin. he has a love for world percussion. In 2013, he was featured playing the djembe on a 2 week tour to Ghana with the Brigham Young University-Idaho Collegiate Singers.
