MBA Students Meet Governor Prizker

Thanks to MBA student Joe Cushing for providing this information. (Joe is fourth from the right. Instructor Bruce Sommer is second from the left.)

MBA students enrolled in MGT 550 Entrepreneurship participated in a day trip to Chicago to tour the Discovery Partners Institute, 1872, MorningStar, and the UIC Innovation Center. Bruce Sommer teaches MGT 550 and is the Director of Economic Development & Innovation at UIS.

The obvious highlight of the day was meeting Governor Pritzker who gave an inspirational unplanned talk and graciously answered questions about the need for entrepreneurs and how we as a community can help them start businesses.  1871 is a business incubator that was started by a venture capital group that included Governor Pritzker.

Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) is a part of the Illinois Innovation Network and is a purpose driven collaborative research institute focused on creating solutions to grand challenges.  Students received a visionary presentation of DPI’s proposed project and scope of what they are wanting to do as part of a global learning research facility.

The purpose of the trip was to experience how the Chicago area is trying to inspire new entrepreneurs to start new businesses, and how ideas and consumer needs become new products. Students have a local Springfield perspective of this need for basic start-up assistance and networking opportunities from Innovate Springfield.

UISSHRM Places Second in CompetitionUISSHRM Students

The UIS student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (UISSHRM) completed in both the Case Competition and HR Games at the annual Illinois State Student HR Conference and Competition. The case competition provides the opportunity to develop capabilities in finding strategic solutions to real-life business issues. It also encourages relationships between students and faculty from schools around the state and provides an opportunity for industry professionals to witness future HR leaders.

UISSHRM placed second in both competitions. Two MBA students, Le Tran (second row, second from left) and Trinh Tran (second row, far right), participated.  Trinh Tran also serviced as UISSHRM Director of Information Services during the 2018-19 academic year improving the UIS Connection Competition Blackboard and several social media sites.

Donna Rogers Skowronski is the UISSHRM Faculty Advisor (second row, far left).  Donna teaches MGT 538–Strategic Human Resource Management in the HR Management Certificate and an MBA elective.
