Phi Alpha Theta

Mission Statement

The Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society (ΦΑΘ) membership drive for is now open. Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of History through encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. Membership is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

UIS’s Alpha Zeta Iota (AZI) chapter of Phi Alpha Theta was founded in 1992 under the direction of now Professor Emerita Deborah Kuhn McGregor and has been very active. We at the History Department take pride in our student members who have presented papers over the years at several regional and national conferences and have distinguished themselves as historians. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is a lifetime one. There is no annual fee to maintain it but only a one-time $50 initiation fee per student that is payable at the time of the initiation. Upon graduation, student members receive a cord.

Eligibility

In order to become a member of Phi Alpha Theta, undergraduate students must:

  • Complete 12 semester hours in History with a GPA of at least 3.15 in History,HIS Students
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or better overall, and
  • Be in the top 35% of the class.


Graduate Students should:

  • Complete a minimum of 12 semester hours toward their Master’s Degree,
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and
  • Have completed approximately 30% of the residence requirements for the Master’s Degree.

*Membership is not limited to History majors. Those interested in joining may contact the History GA (Contact US) for an application form.

Initiation into the UIS branch of Phi Alpha Theta takes place in the spring, with a recognition event held shortly before graduation.

To apply for membership to Phi Alpha Theta, please, fill out the membership application that you will find here: http://phialphatheta.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/PAT-Membership-Application-Form.pdf, then return it to the Phi Alpha Theta Faculty Advisor with a check for $50 made out to Phi Alpha Theta. Once the society has received your application and application fee, they will process it and send us your membership certificate that we will mail to you. Applications should be mailed by Monday, March 4th, 2019 to:
