Completing the Application

  • Complete the online application, submitting:
    • current resume;
    • Essay: short biographical sketch/personal statement (1 -2 pages) highlighting how your interests, experience, and background would benefit you in your role as an ILSIP intern; state policy (2 – 5 pages) discussing one issue facing Illinois government and suggested policy changes relevant to the issue; and experience/interest (1 page) describing your interest, experience, or background in government related activity;
    • official transcripts from each college and university attended; and
    • three letters of recommendation.

To access the online application, click apply and complete the graduate online application for the Illinois Legislative Staff Intern Program as either a non-degree or degree applicant. Instructions include the completion of the graduate application, uploading of resume, essay, and writing sample (if applying for an internship with the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability) as well as submission of official transcripts by the institution or college and requesting letters of reference.  All of your application materials are submitted electronically through the online application.

Application Deadline and Process

All application materials are due March 1. However, applications will continue to be processed for consideration until the positions are filled. After an initial screening of applications, selected candidates will be invited to interview with legislative staff.  Interviews are scheduled and conducted electronically using Zoom. The deliberations of the selection committee are confidential and final. All applications become the property of the University of Illinois Springfield.
