2014 Lincoln Legacy Lecture adLincoln’s Funeral

The 12th Annual Lincoln Legacy Lectures will be held at the University of Illinois Springfield on October 16, 2014, with the theme “Lincoln’s Funeral.” The lectures will provide background before the 150th anniversary commemoration of Abraham Lincoln’s funeral in Springfield in 2015.

James L. Swanson, senior legal scholar at The Heritage Foundation, will present a lecture titled “I give you my sprig of lilac”: The Death and Funeral of Abraham Lincoln.” Dr. Richard Wightman Fox, professor of history at the University of Southern California, will present a lecture titled “What We’ve Forgotten about Lincoln’s Funeral, and What We’ve Never Known.” Dr. Michael Burlingame, who holds the Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at UIS, will offer opening remarks, titled “Why Lincoln was Murdered,” and serve as moderator.

Swanson is the author of Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer (William Morrow, 2006), and its sequel Bloody Crimes: The Funeral for Abraham Lincoln and the Chase for Jefferson Davis (HarperCollins, 2011). Fox is the author of the forthcoming Lincoln’s Body: A Cultural History (Norton, 2015). Burlingame is the author of the two-volume biography, Abraham Lincoln: A Life (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008). The authors’ books will be available for purchase and signing at the reception following the lectures.

The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium at UIS. It is free and open to the public; no reservation or ticket is required. Arrive early for seating in the auditorium. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Overflow seating will be in Public Affairs Center room C/D.
