COLRS Fellow Layne Morsch presents to a class.COLRS Research Center provides leadership for research on online and blended learning at UIS and beyond. It joins faculty and community members from across the institution and the nation in the collaborative pursuit of research which furthers knowledge in the field and improves the quality of online education. In addition, COLRS Research Center identifies and joins educational, institutional, and corporate partners in the support of best practices, emerging technologies, and the effective design of institutional and individual learning.

COLRS Research is a direct result of the leadership and successful development of online learning at the University of Illinois Springfield. It is supported by the UIS Center for Online Learning, Research and Service, and UIS faculty and staff.

Summer 2018 UIS Online Learning Statistics

  • Online majors make up 45.7% of UIS headcount (up from 43.9% for Summer 2017)
    • 785 total online majors
    • 346 undergraduate online majors
    • 439 graduate online majors
  • Online majors are older than their on-campus counterparts:
    • At the undergraduate level by 7.6 years (32.6 vs 25.0)
    • At the masters level by 6.0 years (35.1 vs 29.1)
  • Online majors reside in:
    • 42 states (not HI, KS, ME, ND, RI, SD, VT, WY)
    • 1 territory (PR)
    • 65 counties in Illinois
    • 4 foreign countries (Germany, Guernsey, Netherlands, South Korea)
  • 94.1% of online majors from Illinois have mailing addresses outside Sangamon county
  • 41.3% of online majors have mailing addresses outside of Illinois
  • 88.1% of credits were generated in online courses (up from 85.0% for Summer 2017)
  • 5.5% of credits were generated in blended courses (up from 3.2% for Summer 2017)
  • 89.3% of students took at least one online course (up from 87.9% for Summer 2017
  • 85.8% of students were registered only in online courses (up from 82.8% for Summer 2017)
