About NCBI Workshops

Controversial Issues Workshop

Addressing controversial issues is often difficult for even the most seasoned leaders, because they raise questions that challenge core personal beliefs. The NCBI Controversial Issue Process trains leaders to deal constructively with tough conflicts, enabling them to move disputing parties toward future cooperation.

Facilitators provide a structured methodology that allows people on both sides of an entrenched issue to express their concerns, to listen attentively to the other side, and then to reframe the issue in a way that respectfully takes into account the concerns of both sides.

The skills practiced in the NCBI Controversial Issue Process are applicable to every conflict situation, whether the controversy involves a labor-management dispute, a clash between different organizations, or a quarrel among coworkers.

Join the UIS Coalition Builders for this workshop on Friday, January 31, 12-4PM. PAC C/D. Free Lunch!

Leadership for Equity & Inclusion: A Bias & Prejudice Reduction Workshop

This award winning workshop consists of a series of incremental, participatory activities that empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to take leadership in building inclusive communities in their workplaces, social groups, and neighborhoods. Participants are students, staff, and faculty who are exposed to people with similarities and differences who they engage in life changing discussion. The workshop builds effective relationships within and across group identities. Free Catered Lunch featuring a Fiesta Taco Bar, numerous 15 minute breaks, lite breakfast & coffee at 8:30AM.

The objectives are as follows:

  • To celebrate similarities and differences,
  • To recognize the misinformation that people have learned about various groups,
  • To identify and heal from internalized oppression – the discrimination members of an oppressed group target at themselves and each other,
  • Identifying and expressing pride in the group(s) to which we belong;
  • Learning how groups, other than our own, experience mistreatment;
  • Learning the personal impact of specific incidents of discrimination through the telling of stories; and
  • Learning how to interrupt prejudicial jokes, remarks, and slurs.
