The Learning Hub – COVID-19 Changes to Services

NOTE: As of Wednesday, November 11th, 2020, The Learning Hub will be shifting all of its services to fully remote, in accordance with the guidance provided by the university given the COVID-19 mitigation procedures put in place this week.

All in person appointments will be shifted to Zoom meetings. Please look for communication from your tutor for your Zoom link information.

All SI sessions and office hours will be held via Zoom. Check your Canvas or email for communication from your SI Leader regarding these changes.

All walk-in hours will be held via Zoom. Our website will list the Zoom links, and we will also be posting regularly in Campus Announcements with this information as well.

All other services (workshops, study sessions, etc.) will be held remotely as well.

If you have any questions, please reach out to The Hub’s email (thehub@uis.edu). We want to assure the campus that business will continue otherwise as normal, and all students are welcome to attend our services – we are happy to work with you to ensure your success in your academics!

This page will be continuously updated as we learn more details from our staff and the university. Please stay tuned as we add more information in the coming days. Hours and services may change with little notice in response to public health guidelines.

Policies

In addition to The Learning Hub’s standard policies regarding appointments, use of resources, and study spaces, we have made additional changes to follow the Return to the Prairie guidelines outlined by the university.

Mask Usage

Face coverings (which appropriately shield the nose and mouth) are required in all Learning Hub spaces attended in person, including during tutoring appointments, walk-in hours, SI sessions and office hours, and study sessions. Students who come in to The Hub’s suite without a face covering will be provided with a disposable one. Any student who does not comply with the mask policy will be asked to leave and will have to reschedule their appointments.

Cleaning and Sanitization

The Learning Hub will be following guidelines regarding cleaning and sanitizing of all offices, shared spaces, and equipment to ensure we all stay as safe as possible. Routine cleaning will take place between all student visits to our space, and hand sanitizer will be offered in all offices for use as needed. For safety reasons, some supplies may not be available for students (including pens/pencils, scrap paper, staples, etc.); please plan to bring your own materials you will need while in our space during any appointments or other services.

Suite Traffic

Any student, faculty, or staff member who visits The Learning Hub’s suite will need to follow the directional tape and signage posted throughout to maintain a one-way flow through the space. We will be utilizing our front door as an entrance, and our back doors as exit points.

Arrival for Appointments

Students arriving at The Hub for their appointments will need to call (217) 206-6503 to let us know you are here; we will then inform your tutor and they will retrieve you from our designated waiting area (the Solarium). After calling us, please proceed to this waiting area, following the directional tape, and in a few moments your tutor should find you and escort you to an office to begin your appointment.

Arrival for Walk-In Hours

Students who want to take advantage of any of our walk-in hours we will be offering throughout the Fall 2020 semester will need to use the newly developed Queue App (coming soon!) to “get in line.” Students will be helped on an individual, first come/first served basis. The app will reserve your spot and will inform you via notification when you can head up to The Hub’s designated walk-in space.

Appointments

Appointments will continue in The Learning Hub, but some disciplines may see a reduction in availability. We will have some availability for in person appointments, but strongly suggest students take advantage of our online appointments via Zoom (for all disciplines) and via email (for writing) to practice effective physical distancing.

NOTE: The Learning Hub will be fully remote on Fridays for the Fall 2020 semester. We will have appointments available via Zoom and email for some subjects, and will be available via email if you have any questions or need to get in touch for any reason.

Here is some specific information about each of our remote methods for appointments:

Online (synchronous, available for all disciplines):

Appointment is held at a set time using Zoom. Tutor and student can communicate using microphones and/or chat boxes. Tutor can share any relevant materials via whiteboard, webcam, or document sharing. This appointment type is good for students who may want to ask questions, who work better with another person guiding them, or who prefer a specific time to work on their materials.

Email (asynchronous, available only for writing):

Appointment is not set at a specific time. Students will need to send their materials (including instructions/prompt) to The Hub by 8:30am on the day of their appointment. A member of the writing staff will review the materials, make comments, and send it back to the student by close of business that day (7:00pm M-R; 4:30pm F). This appointment type is good for students who do not necessarily need to ask follow-up questions, who can work on adopting suggested revisions on their own, or who do not need a specific time to work with a tutor on their materials.

Any requests for in person appointments will be dependent on available staffing. Please be patient with us as we navigate this situation, and use our Make an Appointment form to streamline communications.
