The Career Development Center (CDC) offers a wide variety of services and resources to assist online students in working toward their career goals.

Distance Career Counseling

Distance career counseling offers the convenience of being able to work with a career counselor regardless of your location. We communicate using technology devices such as a telephone and e-mail. Review the career counseling page for all the various career topics we can assist you with!

How to Schedule a  Distance Career Counseling Appointment

  • Login to UIS CareerConnect (password required).
  • Locate Shortcuts Menu- right side of screen, after logging into UIS CareerConnect.
  • Select – Schedule an Appointment with My Career Counselor.
  • For initial appointment method, choose “phone”. Complete form  and click Submit.
  • Look for email confirming appointment.

Distance Document Critique (Fast Pass)

Fast Pass is a quick 30 minute appointment best suited for action-oriented document critiques and tips.

How to Schedule a  Distance Fast Pass

  • Login to UIS CareerConnect (password required).
  • Click on the Events/Fast Pass tab at the top of your screen.
  • Select an available time slot under the appropriate date.
  • After choosing your time slot, you will receive a Fast Pass confirmation email.
  • In the email, there will be a link to complete a form indicating connecting by phone or Skype.
  • Fill out the form and click Submit.
  • To engage in session via telephone, it will be your responsibility to call the Career Development Center at 217-206-6508 on the scheduled date and time.

Remote Career Fair Participation

How? Register as an “Online Participant”

  • Login to UIS CareerConnect (password required).
  • Click on the Events/Fast Pass tab at the top of your screen.
  • Select the appropriate Career Fair (Online Participants) event.
  • Click the RSVP button and review the instructions.

Process Involves:

  • Review the list of employers registered for the career fair – Which Recruiters Are Attending?
  • Create a tailored networking letter and resume for each company you would like to connect with (Limit 5 companies).
  • Email your tailored networking letters and resumes to by 12 PM the day before the career fair to be distributed at the event.
  • Career Development Center staff will network and handout up to 5 professional documents for each online student participating via distance.
  • Networking letters and resumes must be tailored and polished to each company so as to provide points for staff to engage recruiters.

Explore Majors (Career Pathfinder & FOCUS)

  •  Explore Career Pathfinder to connect to individual field of studies at UIS.
  •  Complete FOCUS, a self directed, easy to use, online career planning system, with  assessments including areas associated with interests, skills, personality and values.
    • Access Focus: link above or login to UIS CareerConnect, select link under Online Toolbox,  and use access code: uiscdc .

Create Documents (OptimalResume)

  • Use OptimalResume modules to draft a resume and cover letter.
  • Learn more about OptimalResume and watch video tutorials for assistance using modules and creating documents.

 Job & Internship Search (CareerConnect)

  • Learn more about CareerConnect system and review student access dates.
  • Utilize the Jobs tab in blue header of CareerConnect to tailor search for  Career Development Center Postings and National Postings  (NACElink).
