Participants will learn appreciation for the importance and complexity of mathematics discussions has increased given Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Whole-Class Discussions. This workshop focuses on the critical, but sometimes overlooked, practice of selecting strategies for discussions. A framework will be presented for participants to learn broad categories of considerations for selecting strategies in-the-moment and detailed sub-categories for further refinement when selecting strategies to move toward a mathematical goal. For 20 minutes, participants will engage in the practices of selecting with student work, for 30 minutes, participants will be presented the framework using the student work teachers engaged with, and for 25 minutes, participants will hear teachers’ decision-making from a prior lesson when selecting strategies to move toward a mathematical goal in the whole-class discussion. There are 2 live virtual zoom session for this workshop.
