Karla Solorio ‘22
Hometown: Springfield, Illinois
Future Plans: Become a nurse
First generation pre-nursing student Karla Solorio is part of the Students Transitioning for Academic Retention and Success (STARS) living-learning community at the University of Illinois Springfield. “A lot, if not all of the students in STARS are minorities, so they give us an opportunity to have a group of people who we are able to relate to a lot,” she said. Solorio, a 2018 graduate of Springfield High School, grew up in Beardstown, Illinois until her family moved to the capital city. “UIS is really an exceptional college,” she said. “I think you get a lot of the same opportunities that you would get anywhere else at UIS. You’re not missing out on anything.”
Leadership is lived at UIS. Every day.
