Career Highlights
Mrs. McLaughlin began her school counseling career in Bluffs School District counseling students from Pre-kindergarten through high school. “I wore many hats as was provided with valuable experience serving all these populations,” she said. McLaughlin moved on to the Winchester School District, where she served as the high school counselor, which included college and career counseling, social and emotional counseling as well as serving as the sponsor for groups ranging from Fellowship of Christian Athletes to track coach. Sherri is now part of a team of counselors in the Jacksonville High School Counseling Department. “It has been rewarding to work with a team of counselors and share ideas, duties and skills.” She also serves as the President of the Illinois School Counseling Association and is member of a number of other professional counseling organizations. “I am a lifelong learner and continue to attend conferences, workshops and events to stay up-to-date and learn new skills in the field of counseling.”

Memories of SSU/UIS
“I met my dearest friend, Dr. Nithya Karappaswamy, while attending UIS. She was also a counseling student. When I met Nithya, she was new to the United States, straight from India. We had so much fun together exploring language, culture and just having fun attending events. We also worked hard to bring Ken Hardy to our campus for a presentation. In order to make the budget, we ended up selling M&M’s, but it was worth every package that we sold.”

How did UIS change or prepare you?
“My educational experience and the faculty support afforded me the opportunity to serve as the graduate assistant for the Human Development Counseling Program. I was able to complete all of the coursework offered in all three tracks of the program at that time, school, community and marriage and family therapy. We took our children to Disney World for a vacation and a celebration of the completion of my degree. I received a phone call while at Disney that I was approved to be hired as the first Bluffs school counselor for grades pre-k through 12th grade. I firmly believe that my education and experience at UIS was the reason I received a job within two weeks following my graduation.”

Interesting Fact
“I love dancing. My husband and I are currently taking ballroom dance lessons. I treasure my son Michael, daughter Danielle, and grandson, Oliver. Oliver has brought a whole new perspective to my world that is undeniably a bright light and adventure. Being a grandparent is super special.”
