Founder and owner, Phelon Public Strategies communications consultancy
Prior to opening her own consulting company, Rikeesha Phelon served as the Press Secretary in the Office of the Illinois Senate President. “My first week on the job as a press secretary for the Senate was during Illinois’ first-ever impeachment trial of a sitting governor. Managing media requests and interviews during the political trial that caught the attention of the nation remains the biggest challenge I have faced since coming to work under the Dome.” Phelan also served as a public information officer for the Illinois Department of Human Services and also as the senior communications manager for all Illinois agency media relations. During the 2014 Governor’s Race, Phelon served as campaign spokesperson and consultant for the Democratic Governors Association.
Memories of SSU/UIS
“I had spectacular opportunities while at UIS. The capstone of that experience was working for the Center for State Policy and Leadership as a Graduate Assistant.”
How did UIS change or prepare you?
“The public affairs mission of the university perfectly matched my goals and career objectives. The ability to learn as a student and practitioner with access to opportunities and statehouse connections proved to be very valuable.”
Favorite Television Show
“I am obsessed with watching The Good Wife right now. It’s so good that I can totally ignore the technical inaccuracies that show up as the writers try to set the stories in context with Illinois’ current political and legal stages.”
