Memories of SSU/UIS
“As a UIS Public Affairs Reporting program student, I was in the fortunate position of reporting details of the historic General Assembly legislative session in 1991. The station’s lead state capitol reporter was on vacation, and I caught a lucky break. It was Jim Edgar’s first year as Governor and, at the time, it was the longest overtime session in state history.”
How did UIS change or prepare you?
“My UIS experience helped prepare me for a career focused on the public relations of public policy issues in Illinois. It began with insightful classes, including a public budgeting course with Professor Ken Oldfield and a campaign finance course with Illinois State Board of Elections Executive Director Ron Michaelson. Then, the UIS Public Affairs Reporting program offered the opportunity to work seven months reporting on state government with exceptionally bright and committed journalists in the State Capitol Press Corps. My experience at UIS was irreplaceable to my career.”
“I love traveling with my wife, Kim and our daughter, Emily. I’m an avid runner and really into music and sports. (Always up for going to the concert or a game.)”
