Memories of SSU/UIS
“I think one of the great strengths of UIS is its internships with state government. I’ve worked at UIS, taken classes there and even taught a couple of classes there but it all started with the yearlong internship with the Illinois Senate, so that is what I will list as my significant UIS moment. I met and worked with some great people and wound up working for the Senate for six years.”

How did UIS change or prepare you?
“I came down to Springfield as part of UIS’s Legislative Intern program. I always wanted to get into government and politics and UIS gave me the opportunity to do so. Twenty-five years later I’ve had a career in both politics and history. Those were my majors as an undergraduate and thanks in large measure to UIS, those are the fields I was able to go into. That isn’t something that always happens to a liberal arts major.”

“I know Illinois pretty well but I am learning it in another way by running a race in each of Illinois’ 102 counties. As of this writing, I’ve run in 92 counties and have run races ranging in distance from a two-mile race in Logan County to marathons in Winnebago and Champaign counties.”
