Current Need: Awards for Medical Laboratory Science Students
Many Medical Laboratory Sciences students need help paying for the following items. A gift of $300, given to either the MLS Program Fund or the MLS Student Support Fund would meet one of these needs. Just include a note about the purpose of your gift on your check or under Special Instructions in the online giving form. Your gift will make an immediate and memorable difference for a worthy student. Please give!
- Travel to remote clinical sites
- High speed Internet for their online assignments
- Nice shoes/clothes for clinical sites
The Medical Laboratory Sciences Department has three general funds. You can give as much or as little as you would like to these funds. The links will take you to a safe online giving page. You can also send in your gift by mail.
Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program Fund
This fund provides money for special opportunities or extraordinary needs.
- Faculty and students can travel to a conference to present their research.
- Faculty can take part in a special opportunity to update their skills. Professors need to be aware of the latest developments in their field, so that they can pass this knowledge on to their students.
- The department can purchase special equipment, test materials, resources, or training modules to help our students attain success and achieve their goals.
Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Student Support Fund
Gifts to this fund are used to provide financial assistance for Medical Lab Sciences (MLS) students traveling to clinical sites and other MLS program needs.
Exercise Science Program Fund
This fund provides unrestricted support for Exercise Science. This allows those in charge to use your gift where it is most needed.
The net income from the Fund is used to purchase “big ticket” laboratory equipment in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UIS. The equipment purchases shall be restricted to laboratory equipment for the physical or biological sciences programs that would be used, though not exclusively, in the undergraduate laboratory courses. The expenditures are not necessarily made each year, but rather the net income is allowed to reinvest in the principal of the Fund until the principal reaches at least $30,000 in 2003 dollars adjusted for inflation.
Central Illinois Community Blood Center Scholarship
The Central Illinois Blood Center was founded in 1971 to serve as the link between people willing to give blood and those who need it. The Central Illinois Community Blood Center (CICBC) Scholarship was established for junior and senior full-time students enrolled in the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at UIS. Amid a dramatic nation-wide shortage, the CIBC scholarships are designed to encourage qualified students to pursue careers as blood banking and transfusion medicine technologists.
James Evenson Allied Health MLS Scholarship Fund
James Evenson, of Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, encouraged UIS Medical Laboratory Sciences students to apply for a Siemens corporate scholarship. After student Katelyn Fanning won a scholarship, Mr. Evenson responded by creating his own scholarship and then secured a Siemens grant for his contribution. How great is that?
The Health Professions Scholarship
The Health Professions Scholarship was established by a grant from the Central Illinois Consortium for Health Manpower Education to benefit Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, and Health Services Administration students.
Madeline Roy Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship will support undergraduate scholarships for students in the Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science program in the Department of Allied Health in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Recipients shall have a “B” average to qualify. Scholarships shall be renewable for students who remain in good academic standing and make progress towards their degrees. The scholarship shall be awarded to one student per year and shall be at least $1,000.
Not interested in any of the funds above? Then you can create your own scholarship fund that targets the students you specify in the Medical Laboratory Studies Department. As the principle donor of this new scholarship, you would get to name the fund and establish the selection criteria.
