Athletics Points of Pride (2019-2020 Academic Year)

  • In Spring 2020, UIS student-athletes had a 3.52 GPA, the best semester in UIS athletics history
  • 84.8 percent of the student-athletes had a 3.00 GPA or higher, including 39 with a perfect 4.00 GPA
  • Taryn Christy made program history by becoming the first UIS runner to earn All-American honors in cross country and indoor track and field
  • The UIS men’s cross country team finished second at the GLVC Championships and had four all-conference runners, both program-best marks
  • Two soccer seniors earned all-region honors in Maggie Juhlin and Mario Falsone
  • The top senior class in UIS volleyball history concluded their career with 77 wins during the last four years
  • The men’s basketball team defeated three nationally-ranked opponents in 2019-20, the most in its NCAA history
  • Two basketball players, Malea Jackson and Chase Robinson, were named to the GLVC all-Freshmen team
  • In just 14 games, the UIS baseball team tied a NCAA Division II single-season record with nine grand slams
  • The Prairie Stars softball team had an exciting offense, including ranking fourth in NCAA Division II in stolen bases​

UIS Chancellor Susan and Dennis Koch Excellence in Athletics Endowment Fund

The UIS Chancellor Susan and Dennis Koch Excellence in Athletics Endowment Fund was established after Susan Koch, who served as Chancellor of UIS from 2011 to 2020, announced her intent to retire in June 2020. The fund aims to enhance excellence in all aspects of the athletics program at UIS. The fund shall be used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to enhance the student-athlete experience and/or to advance the overall mission and vision of Prairie Stars athletics. Funds may be used for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to, scholarships, equipment, professional development, travel, and any other investment that will enhance excellence in the UIS Athletics program.

Scholarships

Stars Athletics Scholarship Society Fund (unrestricted for scholarships)

This fund collects all unrestricted gifts for scholarships, allowing Athletics staff to use the scholarships where most needed to encourage stellar athletic programs and meet student-athletes’ needs.

Selected Athletics Scholarships

  • Aydin Gonulsen Scholarship

    This fund will be used to provide scholarships in the Department of Athletics at UIS. The Director of the Department of Athletics, or designee, shall determine the recipients,
    amount and timing of the scholarships to be awarded, subject to the approval of the appropriate University officials.
  • Gus Pflugmacher Basketball Scholarship

    This fund provides a scholarship to be awarded to a student athlete in good academic standing participating in UIS Mens Basketball in the Department of Athletics at UIS.
  • Manny Velasco Scholarship

    This fund will be used to provide scholarships in the Department of Athletics at UIS. The Director of the Department of Athletics, or designee, shall determine the recipients,
    amount and timing of the scholarships to be awarded, subject to the approval of the appropriate University officials.
