This year’s Alternative Spring Break
UIS students doing the Alternative Spring Break this year will be in Biloxi, Mississippi, this year with Community Collaborations International doing work with early childhood education programs as well as coastal restoration projects.
Where Your Gift Will Help
Each year, about 25 students and two chaperones take part in Alternative Spring Break, a week-long service experience that takes place during Spring Recess, usually in mid-March. Students travel off-campus, have the opportunity to make an impact with a national reach, and bring valuable and sometimes life changing experiences back to Illinois with them.
Alternative Spring Break at UIS has been student-driven from the beginning. Students are responsible for the following:
- Choosing the location of trip
- Organizing all the logistics of travel to and from the site
- Raising the necessary funds
- Setting the rules that govern application requirements
The Alternative Spring Break Student Organization is in charge of these responsibilities. The Volunteer Center acts in an advisory capacity to this group and helps secure additional funding when necessary.
Students Need Your Support
Many of our students must work to help meet their expenses during their time at UIS. The ASB trip presents a double challenge: not only do students have to pay for the cost of their trip, but they also lose the income they would have been earning during the break. Because of this, the students work together to raise money for the entire group.
You can help this student-led effort by making a gift to the ASB Fund, using the link above or sending in your check to UIS. Please make a gift today!
