Eugenio "Gene" FernandezMeet Alumnus Eugenio “Gene” Fernandez

Alumnus Eugenio “Gene” Fernandez MS ’07 CBM is the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis, TN. He’s also served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps and held leadership positions with the U.S. Department of Defense. As an online student, Gene says he has “fond memories of working on projects with other students of diverse backgrounds and coordinating conference calls across multiple time zones, including several continents in the world.”

Former President Barack ObamaFormer President Barack Obama Accepts U of I Ethics in Government Award

Former President Barack Obama accepted the U of I Ethics in Government Award on September 7, and spoke on the importance of voting. Forty-seven students from UIS along with others from UIUC and UIC attended the speech. Watch Obama’s full speech online.

Jay LenoAnnouncement of the New UIS Performing Arts Center

Comedian and television star Jay Leno helped announce the creation of the UIS Performing Arts Center. The Center encompasses Sangamon Auditorium, the Studio Theatre, Ticket Office and the Performing Arts Education Connections program. The change brings a new website, searchlights on top of Sangamon Auditorium and plans for future renovations.

Freshman Enrollment Grows by Nearly 14 Percent

Freshman enrollment grew by nearly 14 percent according to Fall Semester 2018 census numbers. Chancellor Susan Koch said, “These numbers show that our increased recruitment efforts, expanding academic programs and new facilities are making a difference.” Read more about enrollment numbers and national rankings.

UIS Perspectives: Communication Skills Key to Success in Life

Chancellor Susan J. KochCollegians are encouraged to develop effective communication skills regardless of major. Reaching StellarReaching Stellar Update

Thanks to many generous donors, the Reaching Stellar campaign has raised $22.8 million (57%), as of this month, toward the $40 million goal. Learn about recent gifts of note, including a 7-figure anonymous gift for the new UIS Center for Lincoln Studies.
