Lois J. Strom | 2020 Loyalty Award Recipient
Lois J. Strom, MA ’82 PAA, of Springfield, Illinois, earned a master’s degree from the university. She spent many years working at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, retiring in 2009 as the administrator for the chairman of the Department of Surgery.
In addition to her involvement with SAGE Society programs and committees, her volunteer work on campus included volunteering at UIS commencement, the Springfield Marathon and with the public radio station. She and her husband, Bruce, attended many Sangamon Auditorium Performances, as well as public programs and lectures on campus. They couple also gave to important University priorities through charitable giving. Lois and Bruce were married for 55 years and had two daughters, three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Lois’ commitment to service included volunteering at numerous community organizations throughout her life. Those included being a member, as well as president, of the local and state chapters of the American Association of University Women. She was a longtime volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and was a co-chair for the formation of the Leadership Springfield program when it formed in 1986.
Additional community involvement included being a past moderator for the First Congregational United Church of Christ; a former Commissioner on the Springfield Planning and Zoning Commission; past chair for the SIU Denim and Diamonds Gala; past president of the Illinois Symphony Guild; past president of P.E.O. Sisterhood chapter HU; past board member for the Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair; and a member of the Junior League of Springfield, the United Way of Central Illinois Board, and the National Association of Medical Administrators.
Lois passed away on January 25, 2020. The University is grateful to be the beneficiary of so much of her time and talents, and respectfully honors her posthumously with the University of Illinois Loyalty Award for Exceptional Alumni Service.
