Carolyn Berning | 2020 Loyalty Award Recipient
Carolyn Berning, MPA ‘95 PAA, of Springfield, Illinois, earned her master’s degree from the University. She worked in consumer services for the Illinois Commerce Commission, retiring in 2002.
In addition to her involvement with SAGE Society programs and committees, Carolyn’s campus involvement also includes being on the Friends of Brookens Library Board, assisting with the Springfield Marathon, volunteering for fundraisers for the public radio station and assisting with the planning of the University’s 40th anniversary celebrations. She also was a member of the team that offered a series of technology lecture programs open to alumni of any UI campus. She and her husband, Richard, often attend public programs and lectures on campus, as well as athletic events and performances at the Sangamon Auditorium. They financially contribute to important University priorities through their charitable giving.
In the broader community, she has volunteered with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the World Affairs Council of Central Illinois; on the boards of the Illinois Symphony Guild of Springfield and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra; has been on the boards of the local and state chapters of the American Association of University Women; and is a member of a local chapter of the philanthropic organization P.E.O. Sisterhood.
