Student Union: The best new destination on the UIS campus
The best new destination on the UIS campus
When you come back to UIS, where do you go to see people, find out what is happening, feel at home on campus?
In the future, that place may very well be the UIS Student Union, a new 50,000-square-foot building that will be located at the south end of the UIS quad.
The Student Union will be the focal point of campus and student life – the heartbeat of campus – where students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members gather in an inclusive and welcoming environment. Its social character make it destined to become the gathering place at UIS.
We have exciting news! Following a groundbreaking celebration on May 4, 2016, construction began on the building, and you have the opportunity now to “check in” on progress through a live Student Union camera.
Alumni deserve their share of thanks for the building. If not for the dedication of the then students, now alumni who helped pass a referendum in 2012, we wouldn’t be seeing the building rise on campus. Alumni have also been generous in supporting the Union through their gifts.
In early 2018, you’ll be able to step into the completed building, and from that day, when you hear the name “UIS,” we predict that an image of the Student Union will come to mind. And no wonder!
The bright, airy interior and elegant contemporary design have been so much admired that in November 2015, School Designs, an online resource for school architecture and construction, presented Dewberry architects with an Outstanding Design award for the UIS Student Union.
You’ll be able to meet friends in the spacious first-floor lounge, enjoy a delicious meal at the new dining facilities and purchase coffee and snacks at the second-floor shop.
You’ll also be able to tour the Student Leadership Center, new home of student government and the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center, with conference rooms and dedicated workspaces for student organizations.
As for those crowded events you attended as students in the Lincoln Residence Hall, the old gymnasium or the PAC Lobby, you’ll love walking into the expansive ballroom and conference spaces in the new Student Union. We are hoping Springfield and the nearby central Illinois communities will take advantage of the space, finding even more reasons to call UIS “their own public university.”
Please let us know if you have any questions about the new Student Union. We want to share this exciting time with you.
