The Illinois Capitol Innovation Competition Awards celebrate leading-edge advances in research, technology, business, and community. Join us in connecting and catalyzing innovation across our community.
- Competition & Celebration
If you are currently participating in research that advances a field outside of healthcare and agriculture, you are encouraged to apply. There are no restrictions on the type of innovation, current status, or impact.
Applicants can include faculty, graduate and undergraduate students at research institutions, as well as researchers employed in industry or working on research independently.
If your business has been in operation for MORE THAN three years and you have recently created or applied an innovative business practice, solution, product, service, design, method, etc. that has advanced your businesses in a material way, we encourage you to apply. All business types and sizes are welcome.
If your business has been in operation for LESS THAN three years and your product or service offers an innovative solution, practice, design, method, etc, we encourage you to apply. Startups will be judged and awarded separate from existing businesses.
If you have a new solution to solve an existing and/or future community problem, including making government more efficient or effective, you are encouraged to apply.
We encourage individuals, researchers, institutions, businesses, government employees and contractors, non-profits/NGOs, and other organizations to apply.
Special recognition will be given to an applicant in this category whose innovation/solution enhances community diversity.
If you are participating in research and/or advanced practices in the field of healthcare, we encourage you to apply here.
Medical school faculty and student researchers, as well as industry researchers employed by area health care institutions and private businesses are encouraged to apply. Applicants can include both individuals, institutions, organizations, and businesses that are researching and/or practicing new healthcare procedures, processes, applications of technology, etc. We encourage advances in therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, research tools, as well as other fields.
If you have accomplished significant advances in your field that have been recognized outside of Central Illinois and you were either born or have lived in Central Illinois, you are encouraged to apply. If your research, innovation, business, etc. has reached a material milestone for your field and you were either born, or at some point in your professional career, lived in Central Illinois, please apply to the Roots category.
The primary objective of these innovation awards is to encourage more innovative activities in Central Illinois. The other innovation categories recognize current innovation activities occurring in Central Illinois. By recognizing and celebrating notable innovators and businesses that are currently operating outside of the area, we hope to further enhance Central Illinois relationships between local innovators and activities outside of the area.
If you are participating in research and/or advanced practices in the field of agriculture, you are encouraged to apply. Applicants can include both individuals, institutions, organizations, and companies that are researching and/or practicing new procedures, processes, use of technology, etc.
Faculty and students, as well as researchers and practitioners employed by area institutions and companies, including startup businesses are encouraged to apply.

Innovate Springfield experts will walk through the application process, explain how applications will be judged, and answer questions. Attendance is optional and will have no impact on any individual application. There are also options to participate remotely. Please contact us if you are interested in joining or have questions.

Information provided in the application may not be held in confidence and is not protected by a confidentiality agreement. Details about the innovation will be shared with competition judges. Please provide only information you are comfortable sharing with the public. Further, intellectual property information provided may meet public disclosure thresholds. Unless the applicant otherwise indicates, all accepted applications will be recognized at the Competition & Awards Ceremony on October 24, 2019, as well as in the Illinois Capital Awards Recognition Booklet and various other promotional materials and websites.
In addition to the recognition described above, winners will receive various free services such as co-work space, legal, accounting and marketing services, access to venture investors, and more through membership in Innovate Springfield business and social innovation incubator.
