September 21, 2005
SPRINGFIELD – Public Radio WUIS 91.9-WIPA 89.3 has named Sean Crawford to be the new Statehouse bureau chief for the station and the Illinois Public Radio news network. Crawford succeeds Bill Wheelhouse, who recently accepted the position of WUIS-WIPA general manager.
Crawford has been a Statehouse reporter for WUIS since 1997. He covered local news on the station’s Morning Edition broadcasts for two years before joining the bureau and has also been a frequent panelist on WUIS’ weekly program State Week in Review. He has received numerous awards for his coverage of state government and politics, including Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors awards for Radio Beat Reporting in 2002 and 2003, and another ACRE award in 2005 for a story on “The Elusive Third Chicagoland Airport.” In 2001 he received an Associated Press award for documentary work.
From 1992 to 1994 Crawford was an editor at Bailey Publishing, where he oversaw three newspapers in the Joliet area. He was news director of WKBM/Joliet from 1989 to 1992 and began his radio career at WJPF/Herrin in 1984. He received a master’s degree in Public Affairs Reporting at the University of Illinois at Springfield in 1997.
“Sean has been an important part of our news team,” noted WUIS News Director Rich Bradley. “He brings consistent quality and measured analysis to the public radio audience. I’m very pleased to have him in this new position.”
“Sometimes people don’t understand how state government truly impacts their daily lives,” said Crawford. “If we can help make sense out of the minutiae and posturing, we can help people keep better tabs on their elected officials and how their money is spent. It’s also nice to be working for a media organization that values this type of news and puts resources into the work we do.”WUIS-WIPA, a service of the Center for State Policy and Leadership at UIS, is listener-supported public radio celebrating its 30th year of broadcasting. WUIS’ mission is to satisfy a curious, societally engaged audience through programming and community outreach. WUIS’ program schedule, events, and other information can be found by visiting www.wuis.org or calling the station at 217/206-6516.
