UIS to hold Eighth Annual Health Fair

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield will host its Eighth Annual Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the concourse on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by UIS’ Campus Health Services and the Masters of Public Health Student Association, the fair is held in conjunction with National Public Health Week, which this year focuses on the theme “Designing Healthy Communities: Raising Healthy Kids.”
CHS Director Lynne Price explained, “In observance of the theme, booths at this year’s fair are interactive and will involve adults and children in learning about their health.”
Educational booths will provide information about fitness and health awareness, nutrition, vegetarianism, smoking cessation, hand washing techniques, giving blood, HIV/AIDS, asthma, body fat testing, substance abuse, heart disease, bone health, health insurance, men’s health, sexuality, child safety, violence and injury prevention, oral/dental health, and massage therapy.
A variety of free health screenings will also be available, including asthma, body fat analysis, blood sugar (requires fasting or waiting two hours after a meal), cholesterol, bone density, blood pressure, and vision.
The following agencies are participating in the Health Fair: American Heart Association; BJ Grand Salon and Spa; Catholic Charities; Central Illinois Community Blood Center; Fifth Street Renaissance; Fit Club; Illinois Department of Public Health; Illinois Pork Producers Association; Kid Care; Memorial Medical Center; Planned Parenthood; Sangamon County Department of Public Health; S.A.R.A Center; Springfield Police Department; Springfield Vegetarian Association; St. John’s Hospital; St. John’s School of Nursing; Triangle Center; and the UIS Counseling Center, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, and Women’s Center.
