Public invited to join UIS musical groups
January 7, 2005
SPRINGFIELD - Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the five campus ensembles currently gearing up for the spring semester at University of Illinois at Springfield. Auditions are not required to join any of the groups outlined below, and most can be taken for academic credit, if desired.
Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, observed, “Whether you’ve been singing or playing an instrument for one year or many years, there’s a place for you with UIS music.”
Graf initiated the UIS Chorus, Band, World Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, and Native American Flute Circle when she was hired in fall 2001 to teach the musical component of UIS’ Capital Scholars curriculum. “Before that, there had been no opportunity for students, faculty, staff, or community members to perform music on campus for over 20 years,” she noted.
Graf added that when she arrived on campus, she sent out an invitation for local musicians to contact her with suggestions, interests, and ideas. “The response was plentiful,” she said, “as one can see by our current array of offerings.”
UIS Music presents two concerts each semester -- a brown-bag concert at mid-point and a finale concert at the end. The 2005 Spring Brown Bag Concert will be held in early March; the finale concert is scheduled for late April.
Rehearsals for the groups listed below begin the week of January 10 and are open to the public. All sessions meet in room 208 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus.
The UIS Chorus has given performances, ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway classics, at such events as the Springfield Festival of Trees, the UIS Talent Expo, the campus Spring Finale Concert, and UIS commencement ceremonies. Chorus rehearsals are 7 to 9:15 p.m. Tuesdays and, for those who are unable to make evening rehearsals, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Students wishing to take this class for academic credit should enroll in MUS 301 Vocal Music Ensemble.
The UIS Band performs in UIS Music concerts and at campus activities such as basketball games. Jazz trumpeter Brian Pryor directs the band and small combos and has set up a music computer lab to assist with performances. Rehearsals are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays. Students wishing to earn academic credit for participating in the band should enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.
The UIS World Percussion Ensemble is a performance group for those interested in hand drumming using percussion instruments of primarily African and Middle Eastern origin. No experience is necessary to join. The group meets from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Students wishing to take this class for credit should enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.
The UIS Native American Flute Circle meets on the second Monday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the Central Illinois Flute Circle.
The UIS Chamber Music Ensemble performs a variety of string-based chamber music, from Renaissance to modern. Ensemble rehearsals are from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. Students wishing to take this class for credit should enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.
Academic credit for these programs is available to those who have been admitted to study at UIS. Registration for the spring 2005 semester is ongoing through January 16; late registration is available after that date. For more information about registration or academic credit, call the UIS Registration Office at 206-6174 or go to www.uis.edu.
