Public invited to participate in Unity Day March

SPRINGFIELD — The public is invited to participate in the Eleventh Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day March, which will begin at noon Monday, January 15. Marchers will gather at a staging area in Comer Cox Park at the corner of Capitol and King Drive, then proceed west to Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 1800 South 18th Street, Springfield.

Immediately following the march, the program, "What Happened to the Dream of Making Every Vote Count?," will take place at the church. Featured speaker will be Reverend Charles W. Tiner, pastor of Pilgrim Rest, with invited comments from Lawrence Johnson, University of Illinois at Springfield associate chancellor for equal access and opportunity; Doug Kamholz, executive director of Heartland Peace Center; Frank McNeil, Springfield alderman; and readers from the UIS Black Writers’ Forum.

The commemorative events are sponsored by the UIS Black Writers’ Forum and Black Caucus. Other groups and individuals are invited to participate in the march and carry a banner. For more information, please contact Marcellus Leonard at 206-7452.
