Public welcome to join in UIS campus music ensembles
August 18, 2003
SPRINGFIELD Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the five campus ensembles currently available through the music program at University of Illinois at Springfield. Auditions are not required to join the groups outlined below, four of which are also offered for academic credit.
Each semester these groups have a modest performance schedule, including a lunchtime concert at mid-term and an end-of-semester showcase concert, as well as performing at other campus events such as home games and commencement ceremonies.
To join a group, stop by at any of the rehearsal times scheduled below, at any point in the semester. During the first week of UIS classes (August 25-29), rehearsals will be informal and refreshments will be served. All rehearsals are held in room 208 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus.
The UIS Chorus has given several performances in a variety of musical genres, ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway classics. Chorus rehearsals are 7 to 9:15 p.m. Tuesdays and from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays. (For academic credit, enroll in MUS 301 Vocal Music Ensemble.)
The UIS Chamber Ensemble is comprised of string and wind instruments and performs classical music ranging from Renaissance to modern. Ensemble rehearsals are from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays. (For academic credit, enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.)
The UIS World Percussion Ensemble is for students interested in hand-drumming techniques of various cultures. No experience is necessary to join. The group meets from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. (For academic credit, enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.)
The UIS Native American Flute Circle meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on the second Monday of every month (first meeting September 8). (Not offered for credit.)
The UIS Band is open to anyone who plays a musical instrument. Last semester the band performed at UIS home basketball games. Rehearsals are 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays. (For academic credit, enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.)
Academic credit for these programs is available to those who have been admitted to study at UIS. Registration for the fall 2003 semester is ongoing through August 27; late registration is available after that date.
