Senate President Emil Jones to speak at UIS Law Day event

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate President, the Honorable Emil Jones will lead the discussion on “Legislative Prospects for Educational Funding,” a special event in honor of Law Day, from 8 to 9:30 a.m., Thursday May 5, in the Public Affairs Center restaurant at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The event is sponsored by UIS’ Pre-Law Center and Institute for Legal and Policy Studies.
The program is open to the public, however reservations are required. A continental breakfast will be served.
Senator Jones will provide an update on his proposals for funding elementary and secondary education as well as the current status of funding for higher education. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Elected to his second term as the Senate’s chief presiding officer in January 2005, Senator Jones is known as a strong proponent of fair and adequate funding of public education in the state. A member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1973 to 1983, he served as an Assistant Democratic Leader and Chairman of the Insurance Committee. He was elected to the state Senate in 1982.
The Pre-Law Center at UIS provides a central resource for students interested in learning about law school options and careers in the legal profession. Services include advice in structuring undergraduate programs to meet future career needs, preparing for LSAT exams, and developing application essays.
